1. Briefly tell us a bit about your background. Silverthorne resident Darrick Wade moved to Summit County on Valentine's Day of 1988. The Austin, Tex., native is married and has four children, ages 15, 19, 22 and 25. He received his bachelor's degree in architecture from Texas Tech University in Lubbock. "I love cycling - road biking and mountain biking - hiking, camping, snowshoeing, snowboarding," Wade said. "There aren't many things I don't like." Wade is a licensed architect and certified planner. He served on the Silverthorne town government staff for 10 years, as community development director from 1990-1997 and as town manager from 1997-2000. He opened his own planning and architecture business in 2000, and he has headed that ever since.
2. What is the main reason you want to be on the council? "I like Silverthorne, I've lived there a long time, and it's home. I feel like I have things to offer, and I'd like to be part of the town
The Dillon Ranger District of the White River National Forest has proposed several changes to recreation fees at Green Mountain Reservoir, north of Silverthorne on Highway 6. Green Mountain Reservoir receives about 34,000 visitors between May and October, with the greatest use in July and August. Funds resulting from the proposed fee increases would be used to offset increased operating expenses for recreation facilities. The Forest Service has been exploring fee increases at Green Mountain for the past three years. The current fee structure, which has been in place since 1997, does not generate sufficient revenue to offset the increasing costs of operating and upgrading the facilities, according to the Forest Service. The new fee proposal was developed with the help of representatives of Heeney businesses, local recreation users and other organizations. Dillon Ranger District proposes to charge $13 per campsite per night for camping, up from the current fee of $5 per vehicle. Tw

Ice activities, including ice skating and ice fishing, at North Pond Park are closed for the season. Ice closure signs have been placed around the pond to notify park visitors of ice conditions that will no longer support recreational activities. "North Pond is somewhat unique because it is spring fed, so although we still have cold ambient temperatures, the ice always begins to thaw significantly around this time each year," public works director Bill Linfield said. North Pond Park is located at the intersection of Highway 9 and Hamilton Creek Road, immediately south of the Silverthorne Elementary School. Questions regarding North Pond Park can be directed to recreation and culture director Joanne Breigenzer at (970) 262-7372.
Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival is accustomed to presenting the gift of fine music for Summit County each year. What it is not accustomed to is receiving a fine musical gift as a present. Lou Del Piccolo, a longtime supporter of the Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival, recently approached the president of Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival, Evie Lau to donate a grand piano. This piano is to be offered for sale, with the proceeds to benefit Alpenglow's annual Chamber Music Festival. A scholarship is awarded annually by Alpenglow to a promising local music student as encouragement for them to realize their dreams. This scholarship is funded by the formal concerts and soirees held during the festival. Last year's scholarship winner was Luke Fatora of Silverthorne, an exceptionally gifted performer, who is now attending the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music. This generous gift to Alpenglow was given by Del Piccolo in memory of his late wife, Silvana. This piano,
SUMMIT COUNTY - Want to grow your own arugula, broccoli, cauliflower, chives, mint or thyme? This will soon be a reality as the Summit Prevention Alliance is prepping to break ground on three temporary greenhouses with help from the Alpine Earth Center. The simple greenhouses will be 60x14 feet, and they'll be built by volunteers next to the Summit County Community and Senior Center in Frisco. The Alpine Earth Center - a garden, landscaping and green-energy business in Silverthorne - designed the greenhouses and its owner Jon Harrington will be overseeing the construction process. Summit Prevention Alliance staffer Joanna Rybak said she hopes produce grown in the greenhouses will provide fresh and affordable veggies for locals well past the normal growing season. She said the greenhouses will also provide fresh greens for local food banks. The alliance is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles in Summit County, and the greenhou
