Overlooking the lake is the Lake Dillon Amphitheatre, the
venue for summer local theater, family programs and the ever popular free
Saturday evening "Sunset at the Summit" concert series. Between the Marina
and the Amphitheatre is the Marina Park, which is home to the Friday Farmers
Market. The Market is an open-air market featuring fresh grown produce,
homemade baked goods, flowers, and specialty foods. The Market runs mid-June
through the end of September. Throughout the town of Dillon
and along the miles of shore-side bike paths are the public parks and the
smaller pocket parks, which provide the perfect resting spot to take in the
views.
In the wintertime, Dillon's quaint and cozy atmosphere is a
great alternative from the larger resorts for lodging, shopping and dining.
Dillon is centrally located along the free bus routes and less than 20 minutes
from any of the county's ski areas. If you are looking for alternate outdoor
activities, there are intermediate snowshoe and cross country skiing
opportunities at the Dillon Nature Preserve, which also offers some of the most
spectacular views within Summit County.
Another great option is Dillon's self-guided historic walking tour around
downtown Dillon that focuses on the buildings and homes moved from the town's
original site prior to the completion of the dam.
DILLON - Approval of Dillon's water and sewer rate hikes was postponed until the town's April 6 meeting at 6 p.m. A public comment period will be available that evening for interested residents. The meeting will be held at the Ptarmigan Best Western conference room, as its being held on election day and Dillon Town Hall will be a polling place. Dillon's town staff say they need to increase rates to maintain the water and sewer fund into the future. This includes funding for operation, maintenance and capital projects. For more information about Dillon's water and sewer study, as well as proposed rate increases, visit http://bit.ly/aNPtmO or www.townofdillon.com.
SILVERTHORNE - There will be a large state-permitted tree burn pile operation starting as soon as today north of Silverthorne. The burn is taking place at the Rocking A ranch, about 1 mile north of LG Everest on the east side of Hwy. 9. The initial start of the burn will produce flames that will be visible from the highway, but smoke should be at a minimum as the wood is old and should burn quickly and hot. The burn is expected to last three of four days, depending on weather Any questions about the burn should be directed to Dan Moroz at Lake Dillon Fire Rescue, (970) 262-5206.
DILLON - To contribute to Dillon - a town he's fallen in love with, Tim Westerberg seeks to join its town council. He's one of three Dillon residents registered for three open council spots. "I've always been involved in some kind of community service wherever I've lived," he said. "It seems to me that getting involved in town council would be a good way to become more informed about community issues and opportunities, and also be of service." Westerberg moved to Dillon seven years ago when he married his wife, Gayle, but he's lived in Colorado for 25 years - 20 of those where spent as a high school principal on the Front Range. He currently works as a self-employed education consultant. Gayle finally brought him to Summit County, but he said he's enjoyed the mountains for a long time. Together they have five children - Wendy (38), Brian (33), Rachel (23), and 19-year-old twins McCabe and Mackenzie.
DILLON - Though changes to Dillon's parking rules aren't set in stone, the town is moving forward on simplifying its laws to limit confusion on what's allowed and what's not. "The real issue is that council recognizes that something needs to be done to address all concerns," Dillon's chief of police Joe Wray said. "We have confusing, complicated rules on parking. It's inconsistent throughout the year and dependent on location. We need to come up with a consistent and fair set of rules that are focused on residents, businesses and visitors alike, and they need to be applicable year-round." Council met with Wray at Tuesday's town work session to discuss parking options, and the discussion will be continued at the next work session scheduled for March 30. According to Wray, right now the town has eight different sets of rules that apply for parking regulations throughout the town based on season, time of day or cer
SUMMIT COUNTY - A community initiative promoting immigrant integration here distributed the remainder of its $300,000 in grant money this week after four years of efforts through local schools, media and law enforcement. "It has been a great experience," said Erika Turner, translator and family liaison with Summit School District. Turner was part of the Global Summit Intercultural Council's final meeting Tuesday. It was decided then that the roughly $2,000 left in grant funds from Colorado Trust would be split between the High Country Soccer Association and the Lake Dillon Theatre Company. The soccer money is to support participation in a young Latino leadership program while the theater is to put on a bilingual play. Global Summit has used other finances to coordinate as many as 32 agencies in bridging cultural divides. A Spanish-speaking radio station was started, cultural competency trainings took place and events were held to make newcomers more comfor
The Dillon Ranger District of the White River National Forest has proposed several changes to recreation fees at Green Mountain Reservoir, north of Silverthorne on Highway 6. Green Mountain Reservoir receives about 34,000 visitors between May and October, with the greatest use in July and August. Funds resulting from the proposed fee increases would be used to offset increased operating expenses for recreation facilities. The Forest Service has been exploring fee increases at Green Mountain for the past three years. The current fee structure, which has been in place since 1997, does not generate sufficient revenue to offset the increasing costs of operating and upgrading the facilities, according to the Forest Service. The new fee proposal was developed with the help of representatives of Heeney businesses, local recreation users and other organizations. Dillon Ranger District proposes to charge $13 per campsite per night for camping, up from the current fee of $5 per vehicle. Tw
DILLON - Dillon's sales tax collection is up for the third month in a row - January 2010 revenues were up 1.5 percent over January 2009, or $5,000. "I attribute that to growth, new business in town," said Town of Dillon finance director Carri McDonnell. McDonnell said there was a $56,200 (or about 15 percent) drop in sales tax funds from January 2009 to January 2008. So, finances are looking up for the town. "One business can make a big difference in a small town," she said. Dillon has added numerous businesses near the Dillon Ridge Market Place this past year, including Walgreens, Noodles and Company, Qdoba and SmashBurger.
2009 numbers According to McDonnell, sales-tax collection began looking up last November. Dillon's revenues for December 2009 were up 2.77 percent, and December's collection had an overall $14,900 increase over 2008. An increase in sales tax collection for November and December was caused by late filers. Without la
